The Squirrel's Flee

A highlight from my professional demo reel, showcasing refined character animation techniques and a deep understanding of organic movement in animal characters.

A comprehensive composition integrating all key animation sequences, synchronized with sound to enhance narrative impact. This includes the run cycle, climb cycle, and two distinct idle animations that collectively establish the scene’s dynamic rhythm.

In order of appearance, the first idle used, in which the squirrel hears something and prepares to run away from the danger.

Then, the run cycle, the most versatile animation of the project. Being used not only as a run away option, but also guiding the viewer through the scene.

Like the run cycle, the climb cycle, critical for establishing the scene’s setting.

The last animation, a second idle, which helps to wrap the whole scene.

Project Background

In my ongoing pursuit of  character animation, I recently refined my demo reel to emphasize my core strengths: creating dynamic, believable movement for a variety of characters—from animals to humans. Utilizing advanced techniques and industry-proven workflows in Blender, I crafted this piece to demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency and creative storytelling.

This project reflects my commitment to elevating my craft and delivering animations that resonate with audiences.

Project Details

Please note that all assets used in this project are owned by P2Design Academy. Since this is a character animation focused demo reel, my role was solely focused on the character animation.

For this project, I went with a simple story: a little squirrel wandering through a park, suddenly hearing a barking dog, and then following the squirrel fleeing away.

For this project, I utilized the pose-to-pose animation technique to meticulously craft four distinct movements: a dynamic run cycle, an anticipatory idle as the squirrel reacts to a sound, a detailed climb cycle, and a concluding idle to encapsulate the scene. Each phase was carefully blocked, refined through breakdown poses, and polished in spline mode, ensuring smooth and believable motion.

The trickiest and most satisfying part of this project was capturing the squirrel’s quick movements and sudden stops, this can be appreciated the best paying close attention to the way its tail reacts to the body movements. I’m really happy with how it turned out and what I learned; how well-chosen animations can really bring a scene to life.
