After a bunch of trial and error, I finally took the shot and created my own character from scratch. I did everything from modeling to texturing, rigging, and animating using just Blender. It was a bit of a puzzle figuring it all out, but I'm really stoked with how Hoshi turned out.
Hoshi as his name implies is a cat astronaut, for this, when modeling him I made his suit resemble that of the NASA astronauts. This was also the main reference for a color palette, after selecting the reference of an eye-catcher orange suit and resembling the NASA logo in the chest area, I decided to balance the character with more muted tones, this was reasoning Hoshi turned out gray, even when in the first place I was thinking in making him more like the well-known cartoon Garfiel.
After the Hoshi was ready the most tedious part, at least for me, was coming, the rigging, with my knowledge of rigging I managed to make a simple, yet efficient rig with which Hoshi was able to move.
Hoshi's all set to be animated, with a neat, optimized topology, baked textures, and a rig ready to roll. Sure, there's still room to improve, but seeing the final result has inspired me to keep creating more characters and keep getting better at it over time
To start off, the first deliverable is the turn around of the character, to see all his dimensions, textures and lastly the topology.
Next, we have a few renders showing Hoshi's personality, on the right side we also have a clay render to display Hoshi's clean topology
Lastly, here we have an animation to showcase Hoshi in action.
